Shonpomtzi, the buchón or great woodpecker, is in Ashaninka tradition a vigilant warrior of the forest, guardian of sound and constant work. His drumming on the tree trunks is a warning call and also a prayer that keeps the forest awake. It is said that with his powerful beak he opens paths for other beings and cleans diseased trees, teaching the importance of persistence, building, and protection. Shonpomtzi symbolizes the power of rhythm, discipline, and communication between worlds, reminding us that each knock on the wood is a way of keeping the pulse of nature alive.
