The Asháninka do not conceive of seasons like the European calendar (spring, summer, autumn, winter), but rather as cycles of relationships between beings.
They observe:Time when the river flows → when the frogs sing and the fish gather.
Time of rain or "winter" → when certain birds return and new flowers bloom.
Time of heat or "summer" → a time of abundance, hunting, and singing.
Time of sowing and harvest → guided by the songs of birds and the tides of the river.
Each season is a conversation between beings. Migratory birds, insects, fish—all are signs of cosmic balance that the Asháninka read to maintain their relationship with the earth.
