Al visitar la Sierra Nevada podemos ver a niñas muy pequeñas tejiendo mochilas, desarrollando su motricidad y sensibilidad para este arte-oficio, pero sobre todo, tejiendo su pensamiento a la vida de la comunidad. El tejido recrea constantemente la historia y la memoria de su pueblo y mantiene vivos los lazos comunitarios. Mientras se transita por el tejido se está recreando la memoria individual y colectiva. El cuerpo de la mochila simboliza el útero femenino y la forma del tejido representa la espiral de la vía láctea.
Como las mismas mujeres arhuacas lo afirman, “Simbólicamente la mochila arhuaca es una prolongación del útero de la madre individual y de la madre universal, y en ella se ven reflejados los tres niveles de significación del mundo: la cosmovisión, la cosmogonía y la cosmología”.
Las mujeres cargan una mochila en su cabeza con la gasa cerca a la frente, otra mochila para cargar el niño a un lado, y una más para cargar la cosecha, al otro lado. Todos los nombres de mujeres arhuacas empiezan con Ati, que quiere decir madre: Ati Nawowa es la dueña de los tejidos de las mochilas; Kaku es el padre.
En las montañas viven los kakus, mientras en las profundidades, en la laguna y el mar, las Atis. Este retrato necesita ser leído, comprendido y expresado en la dimensión del símbolo que se cristaliza en el ritual cotidiano que es el tejer. Así, en el tejer se recuerda constantemente el vínculo entre el cielo y la tierra.

As the Arhuaca women themselves affirm, “Symbolically the Arhuaca backpack is an extension of the uterus of the individual mother and the universal mother, and in it the three levels of meaning of the world are reflected: worldview, cosmogony and cosmology.”
Women carry a backpack on their heads with the gauze close to their forehead, another backpack to carry the child on one side, and another to carry the harvest on the other side. All the names of Arhuaco women begin with Ati, which means mother: Ati Nawowa is the owner of the backpack fabrics; Kaku is the father.
In the mountains live the Kakus, while in the depths, in the lagoon and the sea, the Atis. This portrait needs to be read, understood and expressed in the dimension of the symbol that is crystallized in the daily ritual that is weaving. Thus, in weaving, the link between heaven and earth is constantly recalled.
